Grants, prizes and new Holcim Awards category for young professionals

Holcim Foundation: next generation in focus

Zurich/Switzerland, May 15, 2007. The Holcim Foundation recognizes the critical role of the next generation in promoting innovative approaches to sustainable construction in diverse ways. A new category for students and young professionals has been created in the forthcoming Holcim Awards competition. The Foundation has also handed over grants for PhD research projects and invited university students to attend an international symposium on urban transformation in Shanghai.

“Next Generation” category for Holcim Awards competition

The Holcim Awards is an USD 2 million international competition for future-oriented and tangible sustainable construction projects. For the first time, a special “Next Generation” category with prize money of USD 175,000 will open for entries on June 1, 2007. To be eligible to participate in the “Next Generation” category, all project authors must be less than 35 years of age when entries close on February 29, 2008.

In addition to the main competition for sustainable construction projects at an advanced stage of design and a high probability of execution, the “Next Generation” category is open to ideas and conceptual visions. All entries in the competition will be evaluated by five regional juries of independent experts from architecture, science and civil society. Prizes will be presented at Holcim Awards ceremonies for each region of the world in the third quarter of 2008 in Madrid, Montreal, Mexico City, Marrakech and New Delhi. For more details about the Holcim Awards competition see: www.holcimawards.org

Support for research, learning and innovation in sustainable construction

The Holcim Foundation recently presented USD 200,000 in funding for five projects from Brazil, China, Mexico and Switzerland. Each of the PhD research projects were introduced at the Holcim Forum “Urban_Trans_Formation” in Shanghai, China. The recipients of the first Holcim Foundation Projects grants are Odair Barbosa de Moraes, Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil (“Environmental quality evaluation in informal urban settlements using fuzzy logics”); Lei Pang, Tongji University, China (“Integrated computer-aided technology for ecological evaluation in urban design for historic areas”); Rozana Montiel Saucedo and Arturo Ortiz Struck, Universidad Iberoamericana, Mexico City (“Sustainability in poverty areas”); Deane Simpson, ETH Zurich, Switzerland (“Gerontological urbanism: emerging forms of urbanism for the elderly demographic”); Jörg Spangenberg, Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil (“Sustainable and climatically adapted urban transformation”).

Each research project is co-funded by the corresponding university. Outcomes from the research will be presented at the Holcim Forum in 2010. For more details about the projects see: www.holcimprojects.org

Student poster competition at international symposium

Architecture and design students from six of the world’s leading technical universities competed in local concept poster competitions for visions of sustainable construction. From these local competitions, 30 students were invited to travel to China as guests of the Holcim Foundation to attend the Holcim Forum 2007, “Urban_Trans_Formation”, held at Tongji University in Shanghai.

The posters were displayed at the Forum and encouraged stimulating discussions amongst the attendees. More than 250 experts from 42 countries nominated the projects that were most inspirational regarding sustainable construction and delivering tangible benefits to diverse communities. Prizes were awarded to James Graham and Tad Jusczyk, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA (“Crowd Farm”, 1st prize); Konrad Milton, ETH Zurich, Switzerland (“Creating Egypt's Seventh Oasis”, 2nd prize); Gustavo Torres, Universidad Iberoamericana, Mexico City (“Towards a new rainwater capture system”, 3rd prize); Nils Havelka and Nicolas Zimmermann, ETH Zurich, Switzerland (“LivingHouse Sustainability Concept”, Highly commended); Dukui Li, Jia He and Yuguo Wang, Tongji University, China (“Micro-urbanism”, Highly commended)

For more details and downloadable PDFs of all posters from the student poster competition see: www.holcimforum.org/studentposters

Switzerland & Beyond - with Franz Werner

The Crossroads of Art, Architecture + Design

Switzerland is located in the very heart of Europe, close enough to easily visit sections of Germany to the north, France to the west and Italy to the south. For this reason, students in this course get an opportunity to explore not only Switzerland, but those areas of France, Germany and Italy that are a stone's throw away.

Stone, of course, is the material for much of the older architecture to be found, but given the work of Swiss pioneers - from Paul Klee, Le Corbusier, Alberto Giacometti and Jan Tschichold to Emil Ruder, Armin Hofmann, Jacques Herzog, Pierre de Meuron and Mario Botta - there is much to admire about the use of symbol and color in the region. Indeed, this is the very reason that Switzerland has been able to establish such acclaim in the international design world.

Led many times by Professor Werner (himself a native of Switzerland), the course focuses on guided research trips to significant nearby sites, including Strasbourg, France, and da Vinci's The Last Supper in Milan, Italy (both UNESCO World Heritage sites,) as well as the Frank Gehry-designed Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany. Delving far deeper than would a typical tourist, students observe and record characteristic qualities, histories, design languages and cultural attributes of the various locations in an illustrated travelogue, using a design medium of their own choosing. Travelogues are later reviewed and discussed during regular critiques, leading to the development of a mutually agreed-upon design project that serves the chosen site in a functional (e.g., promotional) way

Summer Research Programm 2007 - EPFL

SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM 2007

– School of Life Sciences -

Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL)

Lausanne, Switzerland

July 16- September 14, 2007

The summer research program offers intensive summer research training opportunities to undergraduate students interested in research careers in the life sciences. We seek to attract the best candidates and thus financial compensation will be provided to cover successful candidates’ living and travel expenses.

Biomedical research increasingly relies on quantitative approaches and cutting edge technology. Many would agree that the future of the life sciences lies at the crossroads of biology, hard sciences and engineering. The School of Life Sciences at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Lausanne, Switzerland, was created on this premise, responding to a demonstrated interest in biologically relevant questions among EPFL professors and researchers in chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, and engineering.

Capitalizing on its initial development in neuroscience (under the auspices of the Brain Mind Institute) and biotechnology (led by the Institute of Bioengineering), the School of Life Sciences has continued to grow; in 2005 the Swiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research (ISREC) joined EPFL, and in the same year EPFL launched the Global Health Institute. In all areas, we emphasize integrated approaches spanning a range of disciplines from functional genomics to high-tech bioengineering.

Selection Criteria: The summer research fellowships will be awarded on a competitive basis, taking into consideration several criteria including the student's academic record, personal statement and letters of recommendation.

Book tip: "Small Number - Big Impact:
Swiss Immigration to the USA"

"Small Number - Big Impact: Swiss Immigration to the USA"

The U.S. has been a popular destination for emigrants from many places including Switzerland, with several hundred thousand Swiss leaving their homeland for the United States from the early 18th century until present day.

The legacy of such people as Albert Gallatin, the Guggenheims, Louis Chevrolet, Adolph F. Bandelier, Othmar H. Ammann, Adolph Rickenbacher, Mari Sandoz and Elisabeth Kübler-Ross can still be felt.

Abundantly illustrated biographies and portraits of both well-known and lesser-known figures from across the centuries collected here testify to the variety of Swiss emigration to the U.S.

There has always been a profusion of reasons to leave one's country and strike out in search of a new life, among them a taste for adventure, the will to freedom, religion, poverty, a sense of mission, the call of science, the thirst for knowledge, love, career planning, the pioneering spirit and many others.

Read continuously, theses accounts provide a glimpse of the big picture, of the effect Swiss immigrants and their descendants have had on the United States.
